In the 18th century all the Ionian islands including Lefkas or Lefkada, were under the occupation of Venetians. In particular, Lefkada was occupied by the Venice Republic from 1684 until 1797 for a period over a century. That long period was quite enough to influence the inhabitants’ habits. As a consequence some of local specialties even the wine and olive oil production became mainly from that time. After all, it was that particular period when the cultivation of grapes and olive trees culminated in Lefkas island.

LOCAL PRODUCTS AND FOOD YOU SHOULD TRY

Now the locals are proud of their food products and recipes. They managed to keep them through out the island’s history as a part of their tradition. So, here are some you should give a try.

Lefkada’s salami which is also renowned in Greece for its unique taste and its garlic fragrance is a must. With some whole pepper corns inside it is something you shouldn’t miss.

Local wine is also recommended. So, why not taking a wine tour to taste the local Vertzami red variety. Also, in Lefkas Earth winery installations and their exhibition that is close to Nydri village, you have the chance to take an interesting wine tour.

Local nougat and sesame cakes from the oldest producer in the island are ideal for little gifts to take back home. Also try the local olive oil pie (ladopita in Greek), from traditional bakeries in the main street of the town. Without doubt it is a delicious choice and matches perfect with a cup of coffee.
