RETREAT ISLAND OF ZEUS LEFKADA TO BECOME YOUR SECRET HAVEN OF TRUE LOVE
This summer come to discover an unspoilt island of the Olympian Greek God of Light, of Love and Poesy, Apollo. Come to explore Lefkada in the Ionian Sea of Greece. The ancient Corinthian colonists had built Apollo’s temple at the island’s southernmost point. They wanted to remember the same God’s temple they had back in their mother city of Corinthos. Today the Dukato lighthouse of Cape Lefkata stands there instead of the ancient temple. But Apollo knew that Lefkada was also the retreat island of Zeus the King of Greek Gods.
In particular, a white cliff, rising on one side perpendicularly from the sea at a height of at least 60 meters was the favorite spot of Zeus. According to the myth it was there where he used to retreat and relieve from his frequent love affairs. For this reason, Apollo instructed Aphrodite to leap from this rock to find relief from her true love pangs with Adonis. She finally did it and thanked her brother for this. Next, it was Sappho the Lesbian poetess who leaped from this rock to relieve herself from her love with Phaon. In modern times people know this place as the ‘Sappho’s Leap’. In 1637 locals from Athani, the nearest village, built a small monastery dedicated to Saint Nicolas the patron of the mariners. It nestles at a sheltered spot in a short distance from the lighthouse and is also another tourist attraction there. The locals honour Saint Nicolas on 10th of May.
