What to Avoid in Lefkada in Summer
Lefkada is famous for exactly the things that make a summer holiday unforgettable: turquoise water, dramatic cliffs, beautiful villages, traditional tavernas and some of the most spectacular beaches in the Ionian Sea. But there is another side to visiting Lefkada in July and August. The island become very busy. Some of the most famous beaches are much harder to enjoy at midday than they look in photographs, parking can become a real problem, and roads to the west coast can be narrow and winding. Recent visitor reviews repeatedly mention crowds, difficult parking and the importance of choosing the right time of day. What to Avoid in Lefkada’s Beaches
Don’t judge a beach only by Instagram photos. This may be the most important Lefkada secret of all. A photograph of a beach tells you almost nothing about:
- how crowded it will be;
- how much shade there is;
- whether the sea is calm that day;
- how difficult the road is;
- whether parking is available;
- how much walking is involved;
- whether boats arrive throughout the day.
For example, visitor reviews of Porto Katsiki regularly mention overcrowding, busy parking and large tourist boats arriving during the afternoon. Reviewers often recommend visiting earlier in the day or later in the afternoon instead. The same pattern appears at other popular beaches.
In addition, visitors love Agios Nikitas for its beautiful setting, but reviews point out that shade is limited and that the beach can become crowded even outside the absolute peak of summer.
Pefkoulia, meanwhile, receives praise from visitors looking for a quieter atmosphere, while some reviews also point out that the beach is stony and that suitable footwear can be useful.
At Agiofili, another popular beach near Vasiliki, recent visitors complain about the number of people arriving by boat throughout the day, while others mention that the beach becomes crowded very quickly.
Also, don’t expect every beach to have soft sand. Lefkada is famous for its incredibly clear blue water, but not every beach has soft sand. Many beaches have pebbles or stones.
A recent review of Ammoussa, for example, specifically recommends water shoes because of the rocky beach. Pefkoulia reviews also mention stones. So, one of the easiest things to avoid is an uncomfortable first swim. Keep a pair of water shoes in your beach bag. They take almost no space and can make a big difference.
And here comes the most important tip. Enjoy the beach in the morning, take a break around lunchtime, explore a village, have a long lunch, return to the sea later, and save your evenings for Lefkada Town, Nidri or one of the island’s villages.
You are on holiday. You don’t need to “complete” five beaches in one day.
What to avoid in Lefkada in Summer in General
Summer demand puts additional pressure on island infrastructure. In August 2025 the island had to face reduced water flows and serious water-supply interruptions. That doesn’t mean visitors should panic — but it is a good reason to avoid wasting water. A few simple habits help:
- Don’t leave taps running.
- Take sensible showers.
- Follow any instructions from your accommodation.
- Keep drinking water with you when heading to remote beaches.
Finally, this is a beautiful island, but its natural landscape is also vulnerable. Avoid parking in ways that block narrow roads, driveways, access for emergency vehicles or local traffic. And never leave rubbish behind. The same applies to beaches: take your rubbish with you if there is no suitable bin nearby. Finally, avoid lighting fires where prohibited or throwing cigarette ends in vegetation! Unfortunately, wildfires occur all over Greece during the summer.
