Are You Ready For TSIKNA?

Are you ready for “TSIKNA“? Greeks all over the world get ready for the Barbecue Day of the Year! “TSIKNOPEMPTI“! It’s always the Thursday of the second week of Carnival. In particular, the word tsikna means the smoke from grilled meat and its delicious smells! Pempti is the fifth day of the week. It is Thursday. By adding the two words together, it’s called Tsiknopempti. That’s a special day for the Greeks to eat a lot of grilled meat. After all, in eleven days, it’s the Clean Monday. It is also known as Ash Monday. This marks the first of the forty days of Great Lent before Easter!
The Barbecue Day of the Year

If you are in Greece choose a Greek meat specialty like kokoretsi, lamb chops, steaks, or sausages. Then enjoy that special day with good company, good wine or beer. Most Greeks prefer to grill the meat of their choice themselves. They do this in their gardens or balconies. Others prefer to have lunch or dinner in a good grill restaurant of their neighborhood.
Tsikna is in the Air

Being in Greece that day for business or for a short holiday one thing is for sure. In particular, you will smell it and you will love it! Tsikna is in the air all over Greece! Even some mayors of cities and towns of the country organize a grill festival. It is held at a local square offering free meat to visitors. Of course, do not miss to taste the best Greek grilled specialty kokoretsi with tzatziki sauce! After all, we visit a country not only for its sights but for its local kitchen as well.
