For this reason, the local authorities, the Greek Orthodox Church and Charities organize Christmas markets to offer food, clothes and shelter. Of course, the traditional Greek sweets of Christmas are melomakarona and kourabiedes. Greek people offer them everywhere during the holidays. Every house, shop or restaurant has a big dish of these traditional sweets to welcome the guests or the customers! Melomakarona a Healthy No Sugar Recipe

An easy recipe for 15 Greek melomakarona without sugar :

  • 100 gr fresh orange juice
  • 130 gr of extra virgin olive oil
  • 300 gr all purpose flour
  • 1 tea spoon of baking soda
  • 1 tea spoon of cinnamon
  • 1 tea spoon of clove
  • orange zest
  • Walnut pieces
  • 1 cup of Greek honey
  • 1 cinnamon stick
Choose a big bowl and pour in the orange juice and the soda. Let the mixture to be activated for a minute. Then add the olive oil, the cinnamon, the orange zest and the clove. Mix all together and add the flour gradually until you have a soft dough. Then you put a baking paper on a kitchen's tray and start making small balls of dough. Put them on the paper one next to the other and press them a little. Take the kitchen's grater and press them to take the little squares shape on the surface just like the photo. Put the tray in a preheated oven with air at 180 degrees Celsius for 30 minutes. For the syrup boil the honey with the stick of cinnamon for 10 minutes. During the procedure take out the black foam with a small colander. Let the syrup to cool enough and then take out the tray from the kitchen and put each one hot melomakarono in the cold syrup for a minute with a spoon. Finally, pour the whole syrup over melomakarona and add the pieces of crushed walnut on them.
