Locals & their cats love siesta

Locals in Lefkada love to do certain things which are dictated by Greece’s climate and its location in the Mediterranean basin. In particular, they are things that represent a slow way of life. So, here are three top things Lefkada’s locals love when they don’t work.

They Love Siesta for Long Living

From 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. don’t even think to go for shopping in Lefkada! It’s siesta time! All the shops close as locals go for lunch and a nap for at least an hour! Even the cats of the island (and they are many) follow the schedule very strictly! After all, not only siestas are vital in warmer climates but they are also considered a healthy habit by medical researches. In particular, rising early to get to work and later have a nap during the heat at the peak of the day, makes a lot of sense. Of course, Greeks are not lazy people because of that. In accordance with the Organization for the Economic Co-operation and Development Greeks work the longest hours in Europe and take fewer holidays than most of their counterparts in European Union.

They Love Eating Healthy Food

Lentils for Good Health

Eating healthy food like legumes such as local Eglouvi’s lentils or fresh fish and sea food is a great thing for locals. Locals love cooking their popular lentils of Lefkada and eating several legumes in the winter. On the contrary, they love eating fresh fish and sea food in the summer. Everyone downtown Lefkada has a favorite fish shop to buy fresh products from the sea. Sea bass, sea bream, calamari and cuttlefish are the most popular to buy at the fish market.

They Love drinking with a Good Company “Parea”

Lefkada’s local wine comes from a special variety called Vertzami which arrived on the island during the Venetian rule in the 17th century. So, the locals love drinking this dark red wine of Lefkada with a good company (‘parea’ in Greek). After all, there are quite a few local vineyards on Lefkada that they produce the local variety ‘Vertzami’. Also, there are many coffee bars (‘kafenia’ in Greek) at the squares of mountainous villages serving good local wine or ouzo. There you can see locals under beautiful plane trees to sip their drink and laugh for hours with a good parea.

With all that saying we want to thank our guests for staying in LEFKASEABNB this summer for a holiday on the beautiful beach of Agios Ioannis. We hope to see you again next summer in 2025. Until then we wish you health & joy in your life.

Love to hearing from you!
