LEFKADA – WEST CHANNEL

If you are on holiday in Greece and you are a fan of romantic lakes and picturesque water channels then you shouldn’t miss a visit to Lefkada an Ionian island in Greece. In particular, if you have ever been in Venice in Italy, then welcome to the little Venice of Greece, Lefkada. After all, Venice and Lefkada have many commons except the water channels and the beautiful alleys. From the 15th century until the end of the 18th century, Venice, due to its powerful Navy dominated the Mediterranean and had established numerous colonies. The Venetians occupied Lefkada’s Santa Maura castle in 1684 and the island remained under their rule until 1797. For over a century the city of Venice influenced Lefkada and the rest of the Ionian islands as well.

Lefkada Inherits a lot from Venice

Lefkada’s Bridge – West Channel

Lefkada boasts beautiful architecture inherited from Venice, and its city plan, oriented from north to south, features narrow alleys that enhance the city’s natural air circulation. Also, beautiful Venetian churches were built in each neighborhood and today they are the jewels of the city’s decoration. Even the local products like wine, salami and sweets come from that particular period! Finally, you shouldn’t miss to watch ‘The Barcarolle’ from Lefkada’s romantic bridge in the middle of August. A traditional event that traces its origins back to the middle age Venice and the folk songs of its Gondoliers..
